Matthew 26:57-68

Jesus before Caiaphas

57 aThose who had seized Jesus led Him away to bCaiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. 58But cPeter was following Him at a distance as far as the dcourtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the
Or servants
,
fofficers to see the outcome.

59Now the chief priests and the whole
Or Sanhedrin
,
hCouncil kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death.
60They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on itwo came forward, 61and said, “This man stated, ‘ jI am able to destroy the
Or sanctuary
temple of God and to rebuild it
Or after
in three days.’”
62The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?” 63But mJesus kept silent. nAnd the high priest said to Him, “I
Or charge You under oath
,
padjure You by qthe living God, that You tell us whether You are
I.e. the Messiah
the Christ, sthe Son of God.”
64Jesus said to him, tYou have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you,
Or from now on
hereafter you will see v the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and w coming on the clouds of heaven.”

65Then the high priest xtore his
Or outer garments
robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy;
66what do you think?” They answered, zHe deserves death!”

67 aaThen they abspat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others
Or beat Him with rods
slapped Him,
68and said, adProphesy to us, You
I.e. the Messiah
Christ; who is the one who hit You?”
